TrekBuddy or mobile gps
Today many of the models of mobile phones have GPS built in, or at least can communicate with a cable or without it. In general, the thrust is navigation, ie, guided from a source to a destination through known roads.Theoretically, the fact you can access a GPS is that we have a device that can tell us our position in geographic coordinates, and this for an archaeologist is always interesting.
In our profession we also need to save points with their coordinates, save travel tracks, create routes, navigate in real time indicating distances and directions, and of course to exchange this information with your computer. If we can locate a topographic map navigation background, it's better (by ordering that it is not).
Well, all that is possible with TrekBuddy , a small free program can be installed on phones that support java (J2M), which allows the use of calibrated maps Oziexplorer . The list of compatible devices is operating system of the device, but it really is quite broad.
seems that an application was originally developed for sports off-road or mountain bike, but its usefulness to us is undeniable. In my case, for example, allowed me to use on one occasion made a survey over several days keeping tracks and waypoints without having to worry about for the duration of the batteries and not carry more weight than is strictly necessary. The
of software has its quirks (and I understand) and requires a little time to configure and load the maps, and you have to read well all the available information on the page and user experiences for optimal performance, but I think that the end result is worth it, and can get by on old phones. TrekBuddy
course will not replace CE Oziexplorer or CompeGPS Pocket Land, but it is one more option and with zero cost ...
